Our Inner Technology

Humans are incredible creatures. We’ve created artificial intelligence, we’ve observed galaxies light years away, we’ve sent people to outer space (and back), and we’re able to cure most diseases with just the flick of a needle. In fact, with enough time and resources, there’s really not much that we can’t do these days.

Yet, in the midst of this technological innovation, we see so much division and misunderstanding and – to put it bluntly – ignorance – rampant within our social ranks. Politicians are addicted to money, corporations are addicted to growth, the media is addicted to fear-mongering, and regular humans are left somewhere in the middle of this whole mess.

What has gone wrong?

In a recent edition of Toastmasters Magazine, Google’s Chief Evangelist illustrates this beautifully. After his powerpoint failed him on stage in front of a 500+ audience, he says the following:

Ladies and gentlemen, I came here to talk about the amazing technologies we build at Google. But the most important technology we use in our lives is right here–our body, our breath, our brain. Let me show you how we can use this technology most effectively when challenged by life’s problems. Let me teach you a small breathing and mindfulness technique I am using right now to manage this situation up here on the stage.

I think Sanjay Gupta is on to something here. In our drive to succeed with ‘outer technology’, as Gupta coins it, we’ve neglected our inner selves.

How can we better know our inner selves? There are a few methods.

First, take a walk. Connecting with nature is proven to improve overall well-being, and of course there’s something special in connecting with nature in its entirety.

If you can’t take a walk for some reason, listening to a nature cd is a great alternative. There are some wonderful sounds recorded onto cds available on Spotify and beyond. Here are a few of my favorites.

Meditate. Even just 3 minutes a day can make a difference.

Join a yoga class. Yoga is a great way to connect with your deeper self.

These are just a few ways I’ve found helpful in connecting with my inner self in times of turmoil.
